Java

Java is a programming language originally developed by Sun Microsystems and is one of the fastest-growing, most widely used, programming languages around.

Java applications, when completed, are typically "compiled" - meaning they are no longer in a human-readable form. These compiled programs can theoretically run on any computer system containing the Java virtual machine (JVM). The advantage of cross-platform independence is that a Java program should run similarly on any supported hardware/operating-system/browser platform thus eliminating many of the inconsistencies and machine specific restrictions common to other languages.

A Java applet is a software component, written in the Java language, and can provide interactive features to web applications that cannot be provided through traditional HTML. While Flash and Java applets each have the capability for delivering such utilities, both require that the user have additional software installed in order to run these embedded programs.
