MySQL

MySQL is one of the world's most popular open source relational database solutions available. It's consistent fast performance, high reliability, and relative ease of use make it ideal for scalable web-based applications.

MySQL is often combined with other technologies, referred to as a "LAMP stack" (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) for the creation of dynamic (non-static & user interactive) websites. Typically this combination of services would need to be hosted on Linux-based servers, though there are some Windows Hosting models that combine both Linux and Windows systems into a cohesive package.

For all MySQL's positives, it offsets these with a couple inconveniences for the small business user. Since MySQL is an "embedded" database system, it cannot be as easily copied and moved around in the same fashion as an Access database. Instead, a MySQL database's contents and structure can be copied, or backed-up, and then this file can be used to install it as a service on another machine which also must run a MySQL server.
