XML (Extensible Markup Language)

XML is a general-purpose, non-presentational markup language used to "carry" and describe data.

It is classified as an extensible language as it allows its users to create and define their own elements. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the structural storage and data exchange across different information systems via the Internet.

XML allows for the further separation of content data from presentational formatting. This isolation eases the adoption of data to be utilized and displayed by many varying devices (computers, handheld mobile devices, voice machines, etc.)
